Are your staff happy?
Some researchers studied an apparently successful organisation for levels of happiness. They found that the majority of the people they surveyed found their work interesting; the pay and conditions more than satisfactory; the holidays generous; the environment supportive to good work; and their colleagues amiable - but they weren’t happy.
So what's the problem?
A bit of digging revealed that the company were not investing sufficiently in either their own or their employees’ futures. The staff were well selected, trained and rewarded for what they were doing but no more. And because people couldn't see how they were going to develop within the company - they were unhappy.
So how do you keep your staff happy?
It's tempting to put staff development on the backburner when you're setting up a new enterprise, or growing your company
But the time comes when people can be trusted with more responsibility. Or need to develop new skills to meet the demands of the product or the service and most importantly, your customers.
This doesn't mean that everyone has to spend ten days a year on training courses. But it does mean everyone should have a development plan which can help shape their own future and the company's.
Linking your staff's training and development plan with the business plan will ensure that all training and development opportunities are tailored to the developing needs of the company.
